Captain’s Log: Post Date 2

As the Mothership continues to be held in Drydock with no change to her condition, the crew, including First Mate Kirby & Gramma D, scramble to find new distractions in the bland Homestead Station. Shore leave has been granted, but the few nearby excursions have been thoroughly explored already.  Captain Ellen has been actively trying to find entertainment – usually ice cream – anything to keep from getting too preoccupied with the impending launch of the SS BTB.

Today, a visit to Stephanie’s and “restocking the Mess” at Wholefoods provided much needed distractions. First Mate Kirby has been working from home in anticipation of the big event, but has orders to report to the office tomorrow if there is no change in the Mothership’s condition.

Inspection continues tomorrow by the midwife, to determine if any further action is necessary before “undocking” will commence. We all look forward to word of our launch from Internal Command.

Captain’s Log: Post Date 1

Orbiting the Mothership: scores of glimmering satellites, beaming positive energy, questions, good vibes, love, support,… questions.

“What’s your Due Date? Do you have a baby yet? How are you? How’s your mom? Are you ready? Are you dilated? Are you having contractions? What sign will the baby be? Have you tried spicy food, walking, sex, eggplant? Are you ready?”

Internal circuits, jammed with speculation: “Was that a real contraction or practice contraction? Is this backache part of labor or from doing too much in the nursery and sitting on bad chairs? Are we ready? What sign will the baby be? Spicy Mexican or Indian? Will ice cream counteract the spicy food too much? Are we ready? Will I notice when I’m dilated? What will we do to induce labor? Will we want to induce labor? Are we ready?”

The captain wishes to reassure the crew that spicy food will be available in the mess for the duration, recreational activities are encouraged to continue, and the new Nursery is fully operational.

We are ready!!

“Due” Date

Here we are, just before 6pm on a lovely Sunday evening! Still preggers and trying a few things to get stuff going: 1) Spicy Pepper Chicken for lunch 2) A nice long walk with my mom 3) maybe… “other things” later.  All reported to help get things moving a bit more quickly!

As Sue says “They always come out.”, and Allison kindly points out “The day isn’t over yet!”.

Funny how I wasn’t too attached to the Due Date until arrived! ;)

When?

“Hello!” to everyone who’s checked in over the last couple weeks to see if we’ve got a new arrival of our own yet – it’s wonderful to hear you.

The News? Not yet! Official Due Date – tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 21. Odds of delivering on our Due Date? About 5%. Reality? Could be any time – same as before.  The midwife confirmed yesterday that all signs are moving in the right direction & all is well with Baby, whose head is very nice & low, and the bambino “doesn’t feel TOO big” (after I said I skipped eating ice cream the day before because I was sure I’d just be making the kid a lot bigger at this point).

We promise to keep you updated – especially as Kirby’s computer will be accompanying us to the hospital to play our birth mix.

To peaceful birth

Our good friends Edson & Teresa delivered their baby girl Aviva on Monday, and all I can say is WOW.

Look at Teresa’s face in her picture on the blog! I wish this peace for all of us waiting to meet our babies. :)

And yesterday our brave acquaintances Martha & Ron from our Hypno-birthing class were in the throes of their much anticipated labor! They are having a home birth in a hottub, which is a wonderful thing. We can’t wait to read the news.

Kids’ Music You Won’t Shoot Yourself Over

Actually, I can’t make that claim. Music is pretty subjective. I can’t be held responsible if this music pushes you over the edge.

But I can tell you, that this music doesn’t feature Elmo and can at least be deemed ‘different’.

Friends Michelle and Josh bought us this CD, Cloud City by Friends with You (disclaimer – the site was having issues when I checked it). ITunes classifies it as ‘Children’s Music’, so that must be true. Most people would call it ‘trippy’. I would say, ‘If Phillip Glass was drinking tequila with David Lynch and passed out watching the Teletubbies, he would write this the next morning’. So, yes, I like it.

Supposedly, this CD has magic powers, like it can quiet screaming babies and make people forget their troubles. I can’t verify this yet but I’ll let you know.

Beautiful in its egregiousness

We are human. We all screw up. We are all capable of being a pain in the ass. Sometimes, though, we hear a story about someone who pushes the boundaries of logic. Someone whose absurd behaviour makes us laugh and turn to our partner and say “At least I’m not THAT bad!”

We thank those people for proving that no matter what we’ve done, there’s somebody who will make us look better.

So, we were talking to an instructor at one of our birth classes. She was at a birth and the woman bearing the child was having some amount of anxiety. Her husband was trying to calm her down using whatever techniques he’d read about or possibly seen on TV. Well, unfortunately for both of them, she wasn’t able to calm down so finally he loses his temper and utters the infamous words,

“I could do this so much better than you.”

Oh my god.

Ellen and I laughed out loud when we heard this. Of course, we felt sorry for that poor woman, but that statement is just so outrageous, it should’ve been in a sitcom. I could see Ricky Gervais saying something like that.

So every now and then, when we’re in a slightly heavy conversation (but not too heavy), we’ll break it up by one of us saying,

“I could do this so much better than you.”

Snicker.

“So long, and thanks for all the fish!”

Big day Wednesday- the last full day (for awhile anyway) working at Coffee Pond after more than 4 years full time (not counting the 9 years before that as a seasonal freelancer!).

The owner(s) surprised me with our favorite pizza for lunch with the whole office as a send-off. Thank you Andy & Marc! What a great place, and in the end hard to let go on a regular basis.

I’ll miss you all, but don’t worry, I’ll be in to show off the “newbie” soon enough, and hope to be in & out on various things eventually. Who knows, you might even have to put up with me wanting to shoot again next year!

Thanks again  to everyone for all the support and kindness you’ve shown us!

Good Times

Aside from highway drama, we’ve had SO MUCH great stuff going on!

For “Labor” Day, we hosted a small “Bellies and Babies” party that brought together a really wonderful cross section of old and new friends who are either pregnant or have had a child in the last year, plus wonderful neighbors and their tots.  It was so nice to see all the new and future moms and dads hanging out with other moms and dads. The grill was going, the advice and experiences were flowing freely, and we really loved every minute! Thank you all for bringing yourselves and yummy food too. :)

Last weekend was also wonderful, & about as busy as it gets! Kirby was relieved as we finished our final class in the Prenatal Marathon I’ve had us on; Newborn Essentials. We got to figure out car seats and diapers with a baby doll. This is one class I think could have benefitted from more time, as it ran over and felt a bit rushed. As in all the classes we’ve done, we did learn good stuff.

In spite of class running a bit over, we were only 10 minutes late to our friends’ wedding. CONGRATULATIONS SHAWN & TRISHA!!!! :) Forget that the FIVE OTHER pregnant women in attendance managed to be on time, we got hear the vows and could not be more happy for S&T. We had a great time! The only tough part being the hour-long drive back in the remenants of Hurricane Hanna. We could have stayed at the hotel, but since I nixed that I volunteered to drive.

Sunday was equally great and busy, starting with brunch and an amazing maternity picture session with Stephanie, Todd & Natalie. As you know, Steph’s been photographing me regularly, but we really wanted Kirby to be in these too. So much FUN!

After pics we ran off from Rockland to Lincoln to meet with our doula, Maria. She’s so lovely and we are thrilled she’ll be attending and helping with our birth. She’s patient too, since we were running 45 minutes late! It has been really helpful to have her insight and calmness during this experience.

So there you go, not all drama, lots of great stuff going on too. My last official day in the office at Coffee Pond is today, and my mom is arriving Saturday – hopefully in time to finish some preparations as we approach our Due Date of Sept. 21. WHEW! :)

Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers…

Sigh. Wednesday did not go as planned.

It sounds very dramatic: “Woman, Pregnant Nine-Months, Rear-Ended!”.

In reality, if I wasn’t pregnant, this was the kind of thing I’d have thought twice about even pulling over to the side of the road for. As it is, when I felt the impact I immediately burst into tears and couldn’t think what on earth I was supposed to do next! We were in the center lane of Rt. 128 N – a major highway- during rush hour. The stupid thing I did was to get out of the car before pulling over (sorry John, I didn’t mention that before!). I had a moment of pity for the poor woman who hit me, imagining how she must have felt seeing my big belly proceed me out of the car.

After checking my rear bumper (scratched – maybe a gouge? no dent), we both pulled onto the left shoulder.  I tried a few times to reach John – that is I tried dialing a few times before my hands stopped shaking enough to get the right number. The 60-ish year old woman who hit me was writing down her info as I reassured John that I (and presumably the BTB) were OK, and I’d keep him updated. After exchanging information with the sweet seeming other driver, I had to sit for a bit to collect my wits. For once in my life I was really confused as to what to do next! Usually I have a pretty good idea of what to do, even in “crisis” situations,  but I was mentally way more rattled than physically jolted. Did I mention that I was at a stand-still when this happened, and the other car couldn’t have been going more that 10-20 mph? Truly if not for my condition I would have just gone to work and thought no more of it, except to wonder if it was worth fixing the bumper.

Clarity came in my second call to John, who said I must call the doctor. Since I was headed in that direction anyway (the office being one exit away), I drove there and called from the parking lot. They had to transfer me to another office. Once I got through to a nurse, even though the accident was “low-impact” she said I must go to hospital for monitoring.

At Newton-Wellesley I eventually found my way to the 5th floor Maternity Ward, since where I’d initially been told to go to wasn’t where I was supposed to be. At this point I need to take a moment and vent about rude, self-involved people!  The front desk of the maternity ward had a sign indicating that since no one was there, to find a bell and ring it. As I, in my muddled state, was deciphering this, a gaggle of presumably new grandparents toting flowers emerged from the other elevator. They, like I, were a bit stumped about what to do, muttering amongst themselves as one grandfather took 90% of the tissues out of a box on the counter, stuffing them in his pocket like that person at fast food restaurants who hordes extra ketchup packets for “emergencies”.  They seemed more or less oblivious to my presence, except to peer at me, wondering if I was supposed direct them, and quickly deciding I was of no use. Having been searching longer, I found the button and pushed it. The woman who emerged at my summons was immediately flagged down by the grand retinue – as if I hadn’t been standing there first, successfully summoned aid, and was clearly the Pregnant one of the bunch waiting to be admitted into the Maternity Ward! As the scene devolved into “Who are you here to see? Oh, I have to look up the room number and clear it, what was the name again? Etc.” I honestly couldn’t take it and stepped up interrupting with, “Ah, excuse me, I was just in a car accident and was sent up here to get on a monitor as soon as possible!” Didn’t help that I also started crying again (I’m a water faucet under the best of circumstances). The poor woman behind the counter can’t be blamed at all. Why there was only one person there I’ll never understand, as a large part of her job entailed being in an area invisible from the front counter. In addition to another couple she’d been admitting when I rang, when it was my turn she got no fewer than 2 phone calls and 3 “buzz in” requests. She felt bad, but I reassured her I wasn’t holding it against her. We sympathized with each other; I that she was the only one on duty, and she that the grampy squad hadn’t deferred to the Pregnant woman at the Maternity Ward who was there before them to begin with!

Happily, once escorted to the Antenatal Unit, things couldn’t have gone better. They strapped me to the fetal heart rate monitor and contraction monitor, offered me a choice of juices, and the lovely nurse even found a book for me once I realized it was a 4-hour process and bemoaned not having anything to read!  After a couple hours Dr. Diaz came in, checked the printout (all good), and said I had another hour or so. I took a potty break, and then, quel surprise, they gave me lunch! I can’t say it was better than hospital food is, but it was hot, and nice, and exactly what I needed when I needed it. Once they sprang me I was feeling a lot better.

The upshot is that while reassured the baby & I had not physically suffered, I can’t help but feel our poor BTB probably had more trauma from my emotional reactions than the low-impact of the accident itself. Strangely enough, BTB was even MORE active than usual while I was hooked up to the monitor. A friend thinks perhaps this means the kid will be a demolition derby driver. We sincerely hope NOT!
